This stunning mural of Captain Tom has been created at the HQ of a business near York. Nicola Makepeace of Britcab explains more
The main base for my firm, portable buildings maker Britcab, is at Tholthorpe – at one time a very busy Second World War airfield.
We have recently commissioned this mural at our Tholthorpe yard to pay tribute not only to the brave airmen who flew from here – but also to our own campaigning centenarian, Captain Tom.
The airmen of the Canadian air force flew hundreds of bombing missions from here in the latter stages of the war. Sadly, 119 Halifax bombers were lost in that period.
In early 1945 they converted from the Halifax to the Avro Lancaster Bombers, depicted here along with the well-loved Spitfire.
Come and take a look for yourself. Our mural is located at Moor Lane Industrial Estate, Tholthorpe, YO61 1SR.
We have chosen ‘The Captain Tom Foundation’ as this year’s nominated charity. If you would like to donate then please visit our Just Giving page here.
