Proud villagers are celebrating the 150th anniversary of Cawood Bridge – the Grade II listed swing bridge which spans the River Ouse.
This Sunday (31 July) villagers will be hosting a day of celebrations to mark the sesquicentennial – anniversary.
The events include a self-guided tour, photography exhibition and storytelling.
After funding the restoration of the historic plaque, they’ll be opening the bridge as part of the celebrations.
Built in 1872, Cawood Bridge replaced the slow and dangerous ferries used to transport people and goods from the village, situated between York and Selby.
Margaret Brearley the chair of the Bridge Celebration Committee said that there is an art competition being run in the local school.
The prize is a chance to go into the control cabin on the bridge and press the button that makes the bridge swing open for river traffic.
Local Councillor, John Cattanach, says he has used his ‘locality budget’ funds to help pay for events and also a commemoration beaker to mark the anniversary.
