One of York’s best known pubs is planning a few changes.
The Old White Swan on Goodramgate dates back to the early 1600s – but the updates will not harm its historical character, its owners say.
There are three main changes planned by pub group Mitchells & Butlers.
They want to increase the width of an existing door to on the north east elevation that faces onto the courtyard, and install a new pair of double doors.
The bar servery to the dining area, which is a ‘modern element and not original’ would be removed.
Planning documents state: “The modern altro floor will be removed and replaced with a section of timber floor to match the existing.
“The wall panelling which is not original will be extended where missing and replaced to match.”
And the modern lobby to the dining area will go, with timber floor installed where there is matting now.
The documents state: “From a design perspective the proposed works will maintain the look and feel of the public house and give a better match to the elevation by mirroring details.”
