
Police confirmed tonight that wanted York sex offender Barry Gibson had been arrested.
A spokeswoman for North Yorkshire Police said that Gibson had been detained on Sunday evening (May 15).
He was arrested by officers in Glentrool area, Newton Stuart, Dunfries and Galloway Scotland and is now in police custody.
Gibson was jailed for life in 2000 on a number of sex offences and was released from prison on licence on November 26, 2015, subject to a number of conditions.
On May 6, Gibson, who was living in the Boroughbridge Road area of York, failed to comply with a condition of his licence and an order was issued to recall him to prison.
He was caught on CCTV near York Minster on May 5, before police moved their search to Scotland.

CCTV pictures released in hunt for wanted York sex offender

Police have issued a series of CCTV images of wanted sex offender Barry Gibson which were taken in the centre of York.
The pictures show him close to York Minster. They were released as officers renewed their urgent appeal to help find him.
Gibson was jailed for life in 2000 on a number of sex offences and was released from prison on licence on November 26, 2015, subject to a number of conditions.
On May 6, Gibson, who was living in the Boroughbridge Road area of York, failed to comply with a condition of his licence and an order was issued to recall him to prison.
Detective Chief Inspector Allan Harder of York Serious Crime Team, said:
I am appealing to public transport workers and passengers, taxi drivers, bus drivers, as well as hotel and guest house owners across the Yorkshire region and beyond, to please call us if they believe they have seen Gibson.
It is vital that he is returned to custody as soon as possible.

The last sighting of him was on Thursday, May 5 2016 – the day before he breached his court order – outside the taxi rank near York Minster.
He was last seen wearing dark trousers and a jacket which is red on the bottom and a dark colour on the top half. He was carrying a JD Sports bag over his shoulder.
Extensive police enquiries have been carried out and will continue until Gibson is found, including liaison with neighbouring forces.
To assist the police enquiries, anyone who has seen Gibson or knows of his current whereabouts is asked to contact the police, please do not approach him, but call 999 immediately.
Gibson has connections across the Yorkshire region, in particular North and West Yorkshire.
