** UPDATED – we have removed the image after a man was arrested **
North Yorkshire Police have issued images of a man they wish to speak to following an incident at Fountains Abbey, near Ripon.
As we reported yesterday, graffiti was painted onto the Grade I listed site, causing considerable damage.
The incident took place at 11:30pm on Sunday 16 February.
Location
Officers are asking for the public’s help to identify the man pictured, who they believe may have information that will assist their investigation.
The white paint was marked onto both the abbey and St Mary’s Church.
As the paint used is oil-based, it may cause considerable ruin to the medieval plasterwork.
Fountains Abbey dates back to 1132, and the church to the 1870s.

Sergeant Danny Copperwheat from North Yorkshire Police’s Neighbourhood Policing Team said: “This is an appalling act of vandalism on a world-renowned heritage site.
“North Yorkshire Police will not tolerate these types of acts, and our officers will work tirelessly to bring those responsible to justice.”
