Malton musician and songwriter Andy Stennett was over the moon to discover that one of his tracks will feature in not one, but two big film releases in 2023.
His 1985 cult favourite ‘Melodies of Love’ by Pink Rhythm features on the award-winning LGBTQ film Blue Jean which released in February, as well the Hollywood film Beau is Afraid starring Joaquin Phoenix due for release in May in the UK.
Andy was the keyboard player in the 80s electronic music group Freeez, which had hits such as ‘Southern Freeez’ and ‘IOU’. Pink Rhythm evolved from Freeez and featured members John Rocca and Peter Maas, alongside Andy.
“I feel very proud to be involved in these two films,” said Andy. “After many years in the music industry, it feels an appropriate accolade to have two films in one year.
“The track, Melodies of Love is a catchy little dance number I co-wrote in the 80s with John Rocca around the time when we were in the band Freeez,” continued Andy. “This track was produced later as a vehicle for John’s solo work.
“There has recently been a real buzz around it and it’s nice to see it being used in a film.”
Andy, who’s a management accountant for a housing association, headed down to London with his wife Bernadette to watch the film Blue Jean at the Institute of Contemporary Arts.
The film, which is also set in the 1980s, featured some familiar tracks from the decade – inlcuding ‘Melodies of Love’.
“It may have been a much lesser-known track, but it fitted very well in the genre of the era and I see why they chose it.”
“It’s good to see it get the recognition it deserves.”
Andy has been furiously rooting through his back catalogue to look for further opportunities – so watch this space!
