Two car parks in York are closed as riverside flooding returns in the wake of Storm Bert.
The River Ouse has overtopped its banks in the centre of town this evening (Sunday).
A flood warning has been issued for riverside properties in York.
The Environment Agency says: “Flooding of properties and low-lying land is expected from 7pm today, Sunday.
“Flooding is forecast to affect properties on King’s Staith in York and riverside areas through York, from Lendal Bridge to Millennium Bridge.
“Showers are expected today and tomorrow. We are operating the Foss Barrier, and we have closed flood gates through York. We will continue to monitor levels closely.”
The river level at the Viking Recorder had reached 2.75m at 5.30pm. It is forecast to peak at 3.69m at 9.15am tomorrow.
Property flooding is possible when it goes above 3m.
In response, City of York Council has closed St George’s Field car and coach park. Rowntree Park and its car park is also closed.
The council said on X: “River levels may be high in York over the next couple of days as a result of heavy rainfall and snow from upstream, but the city is still very much open for business.”
