York City captain Sean Newton has commited his future to the club by signing a new two-year-deal.

The 29-year-old Scouser joined the Minstermen from Wrexham last summer and was immediately made skipper.

Newton will now be staying City until the summer of 2020. He said:

We have been speaking about it for the last couple of weeks, but I got injured so I was more focused on getting fit.

Now I am fit, it’s all been sorted, and I am delighted.

I want to make sure I stay here as long as I can and help the club achieve what they want to achieve. There’s a chance of going up this year and that’s our goal.

Newton has made 49 appearences in two separate spells with the club, scoring six goals in the process, including the equaliser in last week’s 2-1 away victory over Darlington.

The former England ‘C’ player identified Martin Gray as one of the main reasons for signing an extension with the club.

And the manager is sure Newton has a big part to play in the club’s plans.

“Sean is a leader who leads by example every day,” he said. “It is fantastic news that he has committed his future to the club for another two-and-a-half years.

“He will play a big part in our plans and is still getting better as a player.”
