A big York store has seen its café marked down on food safety by council inspectors.
Wilko at Clifton Moor’s café comes with the slogan, ‘Good family food’ but the hygiene regime was far from good, according to City of York Council environmental health experts.
They visited on 24 February and published their verdict yesterday (Wednesday): a lowly one out of five food hygiene rating.
The café was rated on three areas:
- Hygienic food handling – Improvement necessary
- Cleanliness and condition of facilities and building – Generally satisfactory
- Management of food safety – Major improvement necessary.
‘Hygienic handling of food’ includes preparation, cooking, re-heating, cooling and storage.
‘Management of food safety’ investigates the system or checks in place to ensure that food sold or served is safe to eat, evidence that staff know about food safety, and the food safety officer has confidence that standards will be maintained in future.
A Wilko spokesperson said: “We take hygiene and cleanliness extremely seriously and are disappointed with the rating.
“Our team is taking immediate action to address each of the points raised.”
