Plans for a new dementia and autism-friendly community hub at the former Heworth gasworks development have been revealed.

The building will have a cafe, space for working from home, outdoor seating and an events area where a programme of workshops and activities will be held.

Early designs show the building with a green roof that can be walked over and with a playground close to the entrance.

Developers North Star have teamed up with organisation Social Vision, who will run the site.

A spokesperson for the developer said creating a dementia and autism-friendly space will be the core of the design, as well as making a safe place for families.

Plans to build 607 new homes on the former gas works site, as well as the community hub, were granted in 2020.

Space to relax and socialise

Joe Gardham of Social Vision at the Heworth gasworks site

Joe Gardham, director of Social Vision, told the planning meeting last March that there is a lack of modern facilities for people with dementia and their carers in the city.

Speaking about the new hub, he said: “Throughout my consultation with local groups, it’s become clear that those caring for people with additional needs want somewhere modern and relevant – a nice space where they can meet, relax and socialise.

“There aren’t many spaces in York, this close to the city centre, that are truly accessible, affordable and flexible in their use.

“Whilst this is an income generating venture, it is very much underpinned by social values. It will be managed by a newly-established not-for-profit body, free of shareholders, with all surplus income reinvested into providing events, workshops and subsidies for local groups and residents.”

A spokesperson for North Star said: “This space will really complement the development, and open it up to the wider community, creating a space that brings people together.

“It will be linked to the adjacent Sustrans cycle track, providing secure bike parking and we’re currently talking to a local charity to design and build their first outdoor gym.”
