A busy through-route in York will close today (Monday, 23 January) for gas repairs.
Skeldergate will be shut at its Micklegate end to allow Northern Gas Networks (NGN) to upgrade pipes. The roadworks will take three weeks.
They are being done in two sections, with a week gap in between. “Both closures will close Skeldergate, with the second allowing access to Fetter Lane,” an NGN spokesperson said.
Here are the dates:
- First closure, 23 January – 6 February
- Second closure, 13 February – 3 March.
The metal gas pipework is to be replaced by more durable plastic pipes, “to ensure a safe and reliable supply of gas to customers now, while getting the network ready to transport alternative greener fuels in the future”.
Mark Mawhood, business operations lead for Northern Gas Networks, said: “We’d like to apologise in advance for any inconvenience caused during these essential works. However, it is vital we complete them in order to continue to maintain a safe and reliable gas supply.

“We want to assure residents and road users that we will be working hard to complete this essential scheme as safely and as quickly as possible.”
