It’s a game of two halves for fans of musical theatre as the Jorvik Gilbert and Sullivan Company take to the stage again.
In the first half of their latest show, the company present Cox And Box. Adapted from a famous farce, this was Sir Arthur Sullivan’s first foray into comic opera – his writing partner being FC Burnand.
It tells the story of old soldier Sergeant Bouncer and his scheme to get double rent from a single room. By day he lets it to Mr Box (a printer who is out all night) and by night to Mr Cox (a hatter who works all day).
His plan works well until Mr Cox is unexpectedly given a day off. The two lodgers meet, and they discover that they share more than the same bed…
This one-act comic opera is followed in the second half by some of the most well-known Gilbert and Sullivan numbers.

Join their next show
As well as preparing for their forthcoming performance, Jorvik Gilbert and Sullivan Company are busy making plans for their next show.
The Sorcerer will arrive at the Jo Ro Theatre in September, and rehearsals begin on Monday (April 13), at Huntington Methodist Church.
“If you want to tread the boards, meet new people and have fun along the way, then why not join us?” said Alex.
“All are welcome and we do not hold auditions for chorus members, as we want to be fully inclusive and believe that anyone who wants to turn up and sing should be able to do so.”
For those wishing to be considered for principal roles, auditions will be held on Sunday, April 19. Please email the company to request an audition slot and for a copy of the audition pieces.
If you’re interested in joining, feel free to go along to the first rehearsal or contact them for more information.
