One of Britain’s biggest Brexit backers is coming to York to campaign for a no deal departure.

Tim Martin, chairman of the JD Wetherspoon pub chain, will head to one of his city pubs to engage with people on why he thinks Britain should quit the European Union.

It is part of his ‘free trade’ tour of 100 UK Spoons where he chats with customers about the benefits of exiting the EU.

He is due to appear at the Punch Bowl on Blossom Street on Tuesday (January 8) at 2.30pm.

‘Better off on day one’

He is no fan of the deal negotiated by Prime Minister Theresa May.

Before embarking on his tour, Tim told Sky News:

  • Now that the details of the appalling deal, negotiated by the Downing Street kitchen cabinet have become clear, it is certain the UK will be financially far better off by choosing no deal.

The hard mathematics demonstrate beyond doubt that no deal leaves the public and the UK better-off on day one after Brexit.

He puts his money where his mouth is. Tim has been replacing EU-sourced drinks in his pubs with products from the UK and elsewhere in the world.

And he is not afraid of robust debate. During his pro-Brexit campaign at a Manchester Wetherspoon’s he faced a mainly pro-Remain crowd – and one man told him he was talking “absolute bollocks”.
