A famous High Street brand has quit York city centre.
Superdry on Davygate is now closed, and work is underway to clear out its stock, fixtures and fittings.
The shop has traded on the street for more than a decade, moving in after the original retailer Borders Bookshop moved out.
Superdry has been in trouble for some time. Back in April it launched a restructuring plan, saying it would be forced to enter administration if it didn’t make drastic changes.
The British fashion brand, which ran 216 shops as well as franchised stores, had been looking at various ways to cut costs after a year of weakening sales and deepening losses.
Last month the business said it was to seek major rent reductions. In addition, between 25 and 30 stores across Europe had been earmarked for closure over the next 12 months.
And Superdry planned to invest more money in its online platform.
A spokesperson for the business said: “We evaluate the performance of each of our stores on an ongoing basis and have closed our Davygate store on the 8th June.
“Customers can still find their favourite Superdry products in our other stores and on our website.”
Shoppers can still visit the Superdry store at York Designer Outlet.
The loss of the shop is a blow for Davygate, which has been revitalised in recent months.
After the street lost the Halifax bank and a couple of big names in Space NK and Accessorize, it looked to be struggling.
But then it bounced back as the home of a new jewellery quarter. And then Slater menswear opened next door and above Superdry last year.
