A famous High Street brand could soon move into the only empty shop in York’s Coppergate Centre.
The large unit was last home to Topshop, Top Man and Miss Selfridge. It closed and moved out in February 2021.
At one point, it looked like Roxy Leisure would open a bar and bowling alley in the unit, even gaining a premises licence, but the company ended up opening in Stonebow House instead.
Now, though, fashion brand Next wants to move into the unit.
It has applied for permission to put signage up on the exterior of the building, found between Primark and Fenwick.
Next wants to install four new signs in all, two on the front elevation and two on the rear elevation.
The popular business already has a city centre store on Coney Street. But the Coppergate Centre unit is larger.
It runs from St Mary’s Square through to Piccadilly, with entrances at both sides, and has three floors.

There is no word yet as to whether Next will move out of Coney Street or operate two stores.
It seems most likely that it would relocate, as the Coney Street building is set for a major refurbishment as part of the redevelopment of the street by the Helmsley Group.
Under those plans, the art deco building would stay, but the ground floor shops would be remodelled. The upper floors would be converted to student accommodation.
