The shortlist for this year’s White Rose Awards has been unveiled – and it includes a lot of York names.

The awards celebrate the very best of tourism in Yorkshire. With 17 categories, from the best Yorkshire pub to outstanding customer service, it is Britain’s largest celebration of tourism.

Bidding for the Arts and Culture award is the renovated and reopened York Theatre Royal.

York has two organisations vying for the Business Tourism award – The Royal York Hotel, fresh from its own multi-million pound makeover, and York Conferences.

No. 21 York, the guest house found on St Mary’s off Bootham, is up for Guest Accommodation of the year.

A contender in the Outstanding Customer Service category is The Grand Hotel and Spa. And there are two city nominations for the Yorkshire Event of the year: Flying Scotsman’s return to the National Railway Museum and the North Yorkshire Moors Railway; and HallowScream at York Maze.

And The Star Inn the City is up for Yorkshire Restaurant of the year (and its sister establishment, The Star at Harome, is named in the Inns and Restaurants with Rooms category).

Hundreds of people will come together for the awards dinner later this year. At last November’s event more than 1,000 people watched as Take That star Gary Barlow, and co-writer of The Girls musical, Tim Firth, were made honorary Yorkshiremen at the first direct arena Leeds.

Sir Gary Verity, chief executive of Welcome to Yorkshire, said: “Once again the entries for this year’s White Rose Awards have been exceptional across all categories, so a huge congratulations to those who have made the shortlist.”
