At York College there’s a variety of adult courses starting this January, ranging from industry-recognised professional qualifications, courses to help with retraining for a career change, and courses purely for leisure and personal development.

There’s also a range of degree-level qualifications in specialist areas of study.

Retraining to be a teacher

Career on track: Martin Stables

Martin Stables completed his PGCE qualification this summer. He said:

Being in my early thirties I saw this as a learning experience and more importantly ‘on the job’ training. It took a while to get my career on track and now I realise that this is what I wanted all along … I wanted to be a teacher.

In the future I see myself staying in the teaching profession and lecturing in Early Years.

Accounting for a career change

‘The best thing I ever did’ – Nicola Millner

Having worked in a management role for thirteen years, Nicola Millner wanted a career change. Being good at maths at school, she regretted not using maths at work.

Wanting a new challenge, Nicola studied the professionally recognised AAT accountancy qualifications at York College.

“The time was right for me to change direction. I felt supported in my studies and the tutors were helpful and approachable,” Nicola said.

“At college I also had access to networking and job opportunities and was able to secure a job in the college’s finance team.

“Later, after studying my Level 4 course, I applied for a teaching role in the college’s business department – something I had not envisaged doing before.”

Nicola has combined her previous management role with her passion for accountancy.

She says:

It’s the best thing I ever did.

I share my enthusiasm for accountancy with my students and they leave college with a professionally recognised qualification, which is a requirement of all reputable accountancy employers.
