Faint hopes that Berwick Kaler would return for the last day of the panto have now been ruled out.
We reported on Thursday that the legendary dame and his sidekick Martin Barrass had tested positive for Covid-19. The timings meant Martin was ruled out of the rest of the run of Dick Turpin Rides Again, which finishes at the Grand Opera House tomorrow (Sunday).
He told us of his disappointment, given he had no symptoms.

There was a possibility that Berwick could make it back for the matinee and evening performances tomorrow.
But today, the Grand Opera House said: “Please be advised that for the final performances of Dick Turpin Rides Again, due to cast self-isolating due following positive Covid-19 tests, Berwick Kaler’s role as Dotty Donut will continue to be covered by actor comedian and legendary panto dame Alan McHugh.
“Martin Barrass’ role as Dunkin Donut will be played by panto star Paul-James Corrigan.
“We would like to thank our audiences for their continued support.”
While fans of the show were naturally disappointed, comments on social media have been very positive about the performances of stand-ins Alan and Paul-James.
And news of Berwick’s absence brought this suggestion from one regular panto-goer: “It’s a shame that there can’t be some sort of live link (Zoom style?) for Berwick and Martin to be there with us on the last night.”
