There are few better combinations than beer and pizza.

And when the beer is brewed locally using traditional methods, and the pizza is freshly cooked in a log-fire oven, you may well imagine you’ve died and gone to foodie heaven.

Fortunately, you don’t need to go to such extremes to sample this beautiful pairing. Instead head along to Bistro Guy on Gillygate which hosts its second Beer and Pizza Festival this weekend.

Cranked up and ready

Anyone hungry?

Chef Guy Whapples will have his log-fire pizza oven cranked up and ready to cook a selection of tempting toppings on his signature sourdough base.

Meanwhile the Society for the Preservation of Beers from the Wood (even its own website admits that it’s a slightly farcical name and suggests you call them SPBW instead) will be providing a selection of their craft beers.

Guy says, “It’s a pleasure to be hosting SPBW for the second time – their beers are unique in that they’re matured in, and served from, wooden barrels.

“I’ve flavour-matched these beautiful beers with the pizzas, so they should complement each other perfectly.”

Amongst the selection of pizzas available, perhaps the ‘Puffing Billy’ pizza (goats cheese, balsamic, red onion, rosemary, rocket) will be up your street, or the ‘Wishy Washy’ (oak smoked salmon, capers, artichokes, cheddar).

Beer-wise, you could be enjoying a Baby-Faced Assassin (an Indian pale ale) or Amish Mash (an American hopped weizen), to name but two.
