Armed police descended in force on a York city centre street this afternoon (Wednesday).
At least five police vehicles, some of them unmarked, came to a halt on St Leonard’s Place shortly after 2pm.
The police helicopter was also seen circling the city centre.
Officers blocked the entrance and exit to the car park opposite York Theatre Royal.
Witnesses told YorkMix they saw armed officers at the scene.
A North Yorkshire Police spokeswoman said the operation was in response to an incident in Union Terrace.
She said:
Shortly after 2pm today (20 May) we received reports of an altercation on Union Terrace, York.
Officers attended and a 30 year old man has been arrested.
The road wasn’t closed. All police have now left the scene.
