Another large shop in York city centre is set to become empty, as the rapid turnover on the high street continues.

Nisbets, the catering supplies company based on the corner of George Hudson Street and Micklegate, has launched a closing down sale. It has not yet been announced whether the company will stay in York elsewhere.

The company moved supplies restaurants and bars on a large scale, as well as selling to individuals.

Posters have gone up in the shop in recent days announcing 25% off everything in store while stocks last.

YorkMix has contacted Nisbets to ask whether the company is relocating within York, or leaving the city altogether, and will add the response to this story.

There is an indication that the company might be moving elsewhere in York.

A firm of property consultants last summer launched a search for suitable sites for Nisbets, including in York, including a specification that it wanted highly-accessible sites with ample customer parking and HGV access.

Nisbets moved into the building in September 2016. It had previously been a Budgen’s mini supermarket, but had been empty for more than two years before Nisbets moved in, after plans to turn it into a restaurant had come to nothing.

There have been a number of shop closures in central York in recent weeks, as soaring costs continue to prove challenging for retailers.

Banks Musicroom in Lendal, believed to be the oldest retailer in the UK, closed last month, Paperchase in Coney Street has closed in the past week, and The Vintage Store in Parliament Street closed earlier this year.
