The number of water main failures in York has gone from a trickle to a flood.

Today saw another pipe failure on a main road in the city.

This time it’s on Huntington Road, close to its junction with Highthorn Road in Huntington.

Leak location

One lane of the road is closed off with cones. Engineers are on site to try and fix the problem.

Yorkshire Water said on X: “We’re sorry customers in YO31 may have low pressure or no water due to a burst pipe.

“We’re doing everything we can to get this fixed as soon as possible. We appreciate your patience and we’ll keep you updated on our progress.”

A number of people in the area have reported have no water or low water pressure.

Meanwhile, the junction of Lawrence Street and James Street remains shut following a water mains burst there.

And Fishergate is also still closed after another pipe failure over the Easter weekend.

There are reports too of leaks on Heworth Road, Link Road in Huntington, Kingsway and Woodthorpe, although YorkMix hasn’t been able to confirm all these.

And these follow the major mains failure which kept Walmgate shut for several days earlier this month.

A Yorkshire Water spokesperson said: “Burst pipes can happen for a number of reasons – often it’s down to a change in pressure or fluctuations in the weather and temperature that cause ground movement and damage the pipe.

“We have had a particularly dry few weeks and saw very changeable weather conditions over the long weekend and have seen more bursts in York as a result. We have been working hard to fix them as quickly as possible and keep disruption to customers to a minimum.

“We have an extensive network of clean water pipes across Yorkshire, and are investing £406m over the next five years to replace more than 1,000km of pipework with durable, flexible plastic pipes that are built to withstand high pressure and temperature variations, resulting in fewer bursts and lower leakage.

“This includes a project in York Mount, which is now underway, with further projects in York over the next two years to replace just under 9km of mains.

“We are now planning for the last three years of the delivery period and as part of this planning process, we will compare performance of all mains in Yorkshire, looking at factors such as frequency of bursts and impact to customers, to ensure that we are prioritising work in the areas that need it the most.”
