We have news of a rival claim to the crown: ‘York’s cheapest tennis club’.
New Earswick tennis club, which is part of the New Earswick Sports and Social Club, reopened in line with the roadmap out of lockdown on Monday (29 March).
As well as welcoming back existing members it is inviting new people to join.
The club got in touch after reading our article about Strensall & Towthorpe Lawn Tennis Club reopening, with its claim to offer ‘the cheapest membership in the city’.
Strensall’s team said they checked through all the clubs with teams in the city leagues before making that boast.
But a spokesperson for the New Earswick club described it as ‘cheap and cheerful’, adding: “In fact being the cheapest in York – ahem, Strensall Lawn Tennis Club, take note – New Earswick Tennis Club not only means cheerful but also friendly, welcoming and inclusive to all.”
The club is taking on new members with prices being
- £20 for juniors
- £60 for adults
- and £110 for households.
Discounts are available for residents of New Earswick.
Competitive to social
As part of New Earswick Sports & Social Club, the facilities include a refreshments bar, changing facilities and regular social events.
The tennis club has three all-weather floodlit courts, runs a regular programme of club nights, as well as seasonal competitions where you get to meet and play other members.
The club spokesperson said: “With teams in the local York leagues, we’re looking for new members to join the mixed, men’s and ladies teams, for when the leagues resume. Players of all abilities are being sought.
“However, if social tennis is your thing, whether you’re returning to the game or just starting out, then you’ll find players of all abilities that will meet you on the courts.
The club also runs regular coaching sessions: ‘Over the net – with Sasha’.
