Plans have gone in for another huge student accommodation block in York.
This one is on the site of Alton Cars at the junction of James Street, Brinkworth Terrace and Elvington Terrace.
The garage would be demolished and a four and a half storey block built there, containing 338 rooms, community facilities and a car park. Alton Cars would relocate to a new site in York.

It would be next door to the Hello Student Accommodation already operating on James Street.
The new plans come from York developers S Harrison. “At present, there is an identified need for purpose built student accommodation in York to serve the growing student population at both campuses and to release homes within the existing housing stock for general (non-student) use,” planning documents say.
Residents consulted
Nearby residents have been consulted, and the developers have been in talks with City of York Council for 12 months ahead of the application.
A cinema room, games room, laundry, common room and gym are part of the proposals. Road access would be off Brinkworth Terrace, but “the proposed use will generate much lower levels of traffic”.
The documents say: “The council encourages purpose-built student housing where there is a proven need and it is designed and managed in a way that attracts students to take it up.
“This can free up housing suitable for wider general housing needs, taking pressure of the private rented sector and increasing the overall housing stock.
“There should be no unacceptable impact on amenity for local residents.”
