One of the best known names in York is to disappear from the city centre.
Coverdales Opticians has announced it will close next month, marking the end of a 150-year era.
The owner Michael Jowett said he had made the decision “with the utmost regret”.
The business will close on Friday 26 May.
“Since Covid and the recent economic downturn trading conditions have been increasingly difficult making it impossible to continue,” he said in a message on Coverdales website.
“I would like to take this opportunity to thank all our patients and customers alike for their loyalty to the Coverdale brand.
“We shall miss you all.”
The business has launched a a closing down sale, where all frames will be sold at 50% off. Lenses will stay at normal price.
Coverdales has been trading in York for more than 150 years. It began as a pharmacy in Gillygate before moving to Parliament Street where the Coverdale family had a pharmacy, dentist, optical and photographic department.
Coverdales then relocated to 53 Walmgate in 1990.
Michael started at Coverdales Opticians in 1979, which was based then in Colliergate, to work with optometrist Christine Harrison. He replaced her business partner, Mr Richard Coverdale.
More recently he retired from day to day eye testing but remained in his managerial role.
The closure of Coverdales comes just weeks after Banks music – said to be the oldest shop in Britain – shut after 267 years.
