It’s enough to make Joseph Rowntree turn in his grave.

Popular attraction York’s Chocolate Story, founded in the city of legendary Rowntree treats like the KitKat and Aero, has polled the nation on its choccy eating habits.

And this revealed a shocking discovery. Britain’s favourite chocolate bar is not one made in our confectionery city.

The winner? Galaxy. Galaxy.

More than 4,000 people had their say, both inside the Chocolate Story and online over the summer holidays.

*Sigh* The winner
*Sigh* The winner
Galaxy, made by Mars, was a clear winner with more than 2,000 votes. So was our second favourite a York bar?

No! That was Cadbury’s Dairy Milk. Mercifully, York-born Aero came in the bronze medal position third place.

The results in full

1.Galaxy
2.Dairy Milk
3.Aero
4.Yorkie
5.Snickers
6.Kit Kat Chunky
7.Mars
8.KitKat
9.Crunchie
10.Toffee Crisp

The KitKat vote was hopelessly split between the Chunky (sixth place) and the normal wafer (eighth).

Altogether York had half the places in the top ten, with Yorkie and Toffee Crisp doing something to burnish local pride.

“It’s great to see a York bar in the nation’s top three favourite chocolate bars, although of course we were hoping to make number 1!” said York’s Chocolate Story general manager Nikki Jacobs.

“The UK has a thriving and diverse chocolate industry with many bars from York and the rest of the country popular across the globe – we were up against some stiff competition.”

Britons spend £3.5 billion on chocolate each year. So we do know what we’re talking about.
