A pioneering York restaurant has been put up for sale after the family who run it said ‘something needs to give’.
Source, the vegan restaurant on Castlegate, is now on the market. It is still open and serving 10.30am-9pm, Thursday to Monday.
Source is run by Adam Lyons and his wife Katie. They also ran Source deli and café on Jubbergate, but that closed in 2020 as they concentrated on the Castlegate restaurant.
They began by welcoming everyone as equals – vegans, vegetarians and the meat eaters. But they moved on to focus 100% on vegan wholefood and plant-based meat dishes.
More recently Adam co-founded VFC with Matthew Glover, a vegan chicken brand, which has enjoyed growing global success.
In a message on Source’s social channels explains why they are selling up after seven years: “As a family we have decided to put the restaurant up for sale.
“It’s a deeply emotional decision and something that hasn’t come lightly.
“With the commitment that the restaurant brings we simply can’t keep a healthy family balance and something needs to give.
“We have had huge success in our time and have worked with the most amazing team of people.
“Source has always been about the people that work here and we are immensely proud of what we have achieved.
“We haven’t been able to give the restaurant the attention that it requires recently and that has been frustrating for us and now believe that the time has come.
“York is our home and we love the people and our city.”
Customers thanked them for the “yummy memories”. One said: “I’m so sorry to hear this, love your restaurant and had hoped to come again when visiting in April. Wishing you and your family the best in the future.”
Source is a 50 seater restaurant which on a busy day serves 200 people. More details about the sale – which includes all fixtures and fittings – are available on the Rightbiz website.
