That ADAM’s a multi-talented chap, isn’t he? Dancing, the arts and music – he’s got them all covered.
Acomb Dance Arts & Music Festival (or ADAM, as he’s known to his friends) is a free family-friendly festival on Saturday July 16.
Here are a few highlights.
Front Street Main Stage & Acoustic Stage
More than 30 choirs, bands and performers will be taking to the stage from 10am to 4pm, alongside Minster FM’s Grand Tour, 2nd Acomb Scouts and CYC Climbing Wall.
Explore Acomb Library
There’s music at Acomb Library from acoustic singer-songwriters Alice Nicholls and Flora Greysteel, children from York Music Centre playing steel drums and junk percussion, modern ballads from Mel Lincoln, ADAM community choir, York Pipeband and popular band Hapless.
While you’re in the library, why not sign your kids up for this year’s national summer reading challenge, The Big Friendly Read, which encourages primary age children to read for pleasure (800,000 took part last year).
Rainbow Palette will be letting kids loose in their arts and crafts supplies.
And you can follow a family of friendly foxes along the Urban Acomb History Trail. When you’ve finished, just return your completed trail to the library and you’ll be entered into a prize draw.
Quaker Meeting House
There’s an exhibition of work, including Manga characters and comic strips, from more than 50 young Acomb artists at the Quaker Meeting House on the Green.
If you want to follow in their colourful footsteps, award-winning art teacher Greg McGee is running ‘How to draw Manga’ workshops from noon to 2.30pm.
St Stephen’s Church
The church organist will be doing what they do best from 2pm, followed at 3pm by Harmonix, a 16-piece vocal group who specialise in close harmonies, performing a variety of songs from the Sixties to the present day.
Acomb Conservative Club
If you want to wet your whistle before the festival gets underway, the Conservative Club is hosting a ‘Meet the Brewer’ event with a nice chap from Rudgate Brewery on Friday at 8pm.
And, on the day itself, there’s an art exhibition from 11am to 2pm.
Foxwood Community Centre
There’s an exhibition by a troop of Foxy Crafters at the community centre from 10am to 2pm and, from 10am to 1pm, creative writing taster sessions.
Lidgett Grove Methodist Church
Everyone – yes, even you – is welcome to join an inclusive, dementia-friendly choir at Lidgett Grove.
There’s a have-a-go rehearsal at 11am; a cuppa and a chat at noon; a performance by Vocal Flourish at 12.30pm; and bacon butties at 1pm in the Friday Nourish Cafe in the church.
