She’s only 19 but already Yasmin Metcalfe can lay claim to being an artist exhibited in the Tate Modern.
The internationally-famous London gallery asked people aged 15-25 to respond to the theme of ‘future’.
Submissions could include anything from graphic design, photography, video, animation or moving image to documented performance, illustration, paintings, print, pattern, sculptures or installation.
Yasmin responded with her video installation, Nothingness – and it was selected by the gallery bigwigs to go on display.
The York College art & design student, who previously studied at Easingwold School, said:
I have also been successful in gaining a place at Goldsmiths in London to study Fine Art in September and when I begin my studies I’ll be able to visit the Tate regularly!
Something and nothing
So what is the video all about? “This video explores the expectation of ‘nothing’,” Yasmin said.
“It’s about the relationship between the viewer and the art itself, showing how ‘nothing’ can be ‘something’ that is interacted,” Yasmin explained.
Nothingness will be featured in What Is The Future Of Art as part of the opening weekend of the new Tate Modern (17-19 June 2016).
Alongside this, Uniqlo will select artworks to feature in a series of displays at their flagship store on Oxford Street and nine others across London.
