Issued by York Museums Trust
Bah Humbug! will echo down the decorated Victorian Street of Kirkgate this Christmas as a one-man performance of A Christmas Carol comes to York Castle Museum as part of their festive events.
Back by popular demand, actor Chris Cade will don many outfits to tell a short version the classic Christmas tale on the traditionally decorated street, which will be stocked with Victorian Christmas goodies.
Every weekend there will also be a traditionally dressed green Father Christmas to meet, the chance to make Victorian Christmas Cards and in the Kitchen Studio people can taste mince pies through history from Tudor times to Nigella Lawsons latest recipe!
Carols in Kirkgate tickets are also still available, taking place on December 11, 12, 13, 14, 15 at 7.30pm.
Helen Young, museum manager, said: “Many of the Christmas traditions we have today were first made popular in the Victorian period. This Christmas you can come and see examples of these on our Victorian Street Kirkgate which will be decorated in a traditional way.
“Every weekend you will also be able to find out about the history of mince pies, meet our Father Christmas in traditional green costume and watch our one man show of A Christmas Carol perfect for getting you into the festive mood!”
Visitors will be able to see the decorated street and also gifts sent to the troops on the front line in World War One in the Military Studio every day until December 24.
A Christmas Carol will be performed at intervals throughout the day on the weekends of December 8 and 9, 15 and 16 and then from December 17 to 24.
Father Christmas, the chance to taste mince pies made to historic recipes and how to make Christmas Cards with a Victorian twist will take place every weekend in December until Christmas. Our traditional Father Christmas, will be dressed in green – it wasn’t until the 20th century that Santa Claus was always depicted as wearing a red gown. In the Victorian period he was pictured in many different colours.
The three mince pies that will be made are a Tudor recipe, using beef mince, a Georgian period recipe, which is more like the mincemeat we know today, using suet; and the third, a Nigella Lawson recipe, using a vegetarian mincemeat without suet.
All events are included in the admission price, which is FREE to York Card holders.
