More details

For its tribute, City Screen is hosting a special screening of Purple Rain, the singer’s finest celluloid hour.

Although most famous for his career as a musician, he debuted as an actor in the 1984 movie as the ‘The Kid’, a character based loosely on the man himself.

The Kid, a young musician, is tormented by an abusive situation at home, and must contend with a rival singer, a burgeoning romance, and his own dissatisfied band, as his star begins to rise.

Purple Rain is a musical drama film that is as jazzily manic and incomprehensibly colourful as its leading man.

Oscar winner

Released simultaneously with Prince’s album of the same name, the film won the Academy Award for Best Music and Best Original Song Score.

Prince died on April 21. City Screen marketing manager Dave Taylor wants fans of the icon to see him on the big screen another time.

“City Screen has been rocked by the loss of several great actors this year and a number of favourite musicians too.

“Some performers, like Bowie, and Prince, were multi-talented individuals and as fans we’d like to show Purple Rain for other fans of Prince in the area.”

If you’re thinking about watching it at home, reconsider.

Film critic Odie Henderson once said: “It demands to be experienced in all its awesomely ridiculous glory on the biggest screen, with the biggest speakers and the biggest crowd.”
