This is a sight you don’t see very often: Flying Scotsman steaming down the track without any coaches.

These glorious pictures of the world famous engine were taken by Nigel Holland. It had just left Grosmont and was passing through Goathland on its way to pick up some carriages at Pickering.

After its first stint back at the National Railway Museum following a £4.2 million renovation, Flying Scotsman has moved on to the North Yorkshire Moors Railway.

It will be running on the railway from Saturday (March 12) until Sunday, March 20.

After people trespassed onto the tracks during the Scotsman’s inaugural journey from London Kings Cross to York last month, police are asking people to keep a safe distance this time.

Inspector Bob Moody of British Transport Police said: “We understand people are excited about seeing the Flying Scotsman’s return, but the railway is a hazardous environment and trespassers endanger their safety and that of others.

“There are lots of safe vantage points to view and take pictures of the train and we would urge people to use those, stay clear of the line and not be tempted to risk their lives and the lives of others by trespassing on the railway.”
