Food & drink, Things to do

It’s time once again for us to gather our nearest and dearest around the dining table for a big old bust-up about the correct topping for a pancake.

Someone always throws in a few curve-balls – maple syrup, peanut butter, gravy (#shudder) – but basically it comes down to a fight to the death (or at least until someone knocks over a chair and a littley starts crying) between lemon and sugar, jam and golden syrup.

We don’t make the rules people; we just report them.

While you’re deciding on your supreme topping, here are a few pancake-related events, and places to go to find the perfect pancake.

York Street Pop-Up Pancakes

Vanbrugh College

Feb 9, noon to 3pm

More details

Enjoy made to order, sweet and savoury crepes (posh pancakes) from a pop-up tent outside Greg’s Place at Vanbrugh College.

Among the slightly more out-there toppings are mozzarella and slow-roasted tomato, ham and cheese, and banana and chocolate.

More traditional pancakes will also be on sale in the Library Cafe and Hub from 10am to 3pm.

Riverside Pancake Day

Slug & Lettuce (Riverside)

Feb 9, 9am to 5pm

More details

Why have just one topping when you can have two, three, four or, indeed, all of them? (Take our advice: cheese or treacle; not cheese and treacle.)

The riverside Slug & Lettuce is offering a full buffet-style topping table, loaded with chopped up chocolate bars, sauces, fruit, marshmallows and all manner of other goodies.

You name it; they’ll have it. But if you don’t think they will, simply put in a request when you make your booking and they’ll see what they can do. It’s £5 for two pancakes and a hot drink.
