A favourite of families for many years, this is all that’s left of York Waterworld.

The iconic building, with its wave-shaped roof and outdoor chutes, has been reduced to rubble.

The fun pool closed last November, as part of the plan to create the York Community Stadium.

That project includes a 25-metre, six-lane swimming pool with a separate teaching and fun pool, although without the chutes or “lazy river” which made Waterworld so popular.

A lot of families are disappointed to see it go. This comment on Facebook is typical of the feeling of many:

When my children were little and Water World was new it was a fantastic place to go. This was 20 years ago of course and sadly it has been left to go downhill.

I only hope the new pool is as much fun.

The stadium project, already behind schedule, might be delayed further, according to a report in the York Press last week.
