The new exhibition at the Blue Tree Gallery, York

The Blue Tree Gallery in York this week launched an exhibition, 4 Women Painters. It runs until November 17 at the Bootham gallery. Here are works by all four artists, and a little about them.

Claire West – Two and a Half Pomegranates

Claire West (b.1968) studied at Humberside University and gained B.A.Honours in Fine Art. As well as exhibiting in galleries throughout the United Kingdom, Claire regularly holds workshops in painting and printmaking to groups of all ages and abilities.

She paints mostly in acrylics and mixed media. Claires work has featured on many television programmes, including The IT Crowd, Life Of Riley and Eastenders.

Giuliana Lazzerini – North Yorkshire Headland

Giuliana was born in Seravezza near Pietrasanta in Tuscany. Between 1962 and 1968 she was a student at the Istituto D’Arte Stagio Stagi in Pietrasanta, gaining a Master of Arts Diploma. Giuliana moved to Yorkshire in 1987 and now lives in York.

The Tuscan landscape and childhood memories still bear a strong influence upon her current work. Her first encounters with art in Italy came as a child in her father’s mosaic studio. These pieces sparked her “fascination with the vibrancy of colour”.

Sharon Winter – Friday Night’s Dream

Sharon is based in Bridlington. She draws inspiration from legends, dreams and the natural world, and the birds which often appear in her paintings are a reflection of the wildlife she sees in her own garden. One key influences on her work is the modernist painter Marc Chagall.

Sue Atkinson – Christmas Eve

Sue Atkinson, born in Bradford in 1949, is the daughter of a wool merchant. She studied at Wakefield College of Art. Her pictures are charming and magical in quality and are in great demand. She expresses her obvious love and enthusiasm for nature through her art and the people and landscapes she portrays.

She is a natural people watcher and her enthusiasm for their antics shines through in her often amusing figure painting.
