Ian Wilson
You might have heard of Ian Wilson as one half of Disco Mister, but he’s been recording his own music behind the scenes, and is making a mark as a solo artist.
It’s been a long time coming. His recently released album 1986, not to be confused with Taylor Swift’s latest offering 1989, has been in the works for eight years.
Stand out moments on the melodic rock album include guitar-heavy songs such as second track New Skin, which definitely has a hint of the Foo Fighters. Songs such as Wash Away, which is about Alzheimer’s disease, are more acoustic.
You can catch Ian performing an acoustic set at the Red Lion on Merchantgate, York, on Saturday (July 10), as part of a weekend of live music. Give the album a listen before you head down. You can stream it on Bandcamp, where it also available to download.
Annastasia Baker
Music snobs might turn their nose up at the phrase ‘two-time X Factor finalist’, but they shouldn’t be so quick to judge.
Soul singer Annastasia Baker has been plugging away at her craft for years.
She began singing in choirs as a child, and her undeniable talent has since taken her on a tour of the US, to performances in the Caribbean and garnered her a MOBO award nomination for best gospel act.
The reggae inspired lead single Pass it On, from her recently released debut album You Turn, is definitely a summer soundtrack.
She’s bringing her soulful gospel to The Basement on Saturday, August 1 as part of a UK wide-tour.
Haxby Swango
If you’re a fan of electronic dance music, it’s definitely worth giving electronic duo Haxby Swango a listen.
Their genre mish-mash of house, electro and grime won’t appeal to everyone: if you’ve been known to say ‘what on earth is this racket?!’ when listening to the top 40, then Haxby Swango might not be for you.
But they’re definitely doing something right, as they’ve recently signed with up-and-coming Yorkshire label Anonymous Records.
Co-founder Stewart Moss said, “When we first heard Haxby Swango, we knew that there was something special here; they’re not your average electronic duo! We are really enthusiastic about this signing.”
Their EP was mastered by Howie Weinberg, who has worked with legends like Nirvana and The Clash. It’s great to see home grown talent on an independent Yorkshire label getting some recognition.
The video for song 5deep is a combination of hypnotic visuals, ominous chanting and an ever-present beat.
If you’re a fan of that, then they’ve got plenty of tracks to keep you going over at their Soundcloud and Bandcamp.
