Another shop in central York is set to shut its doors for good this summer.
Greenwoods Menswear on Coppergate is to cease trading within weeks. It comes soon after stationery store Ryman left the same street.
Large discounts are being offered in-store and big “closing down” sales banners can be seen from the shop’s windows.
The store has been trading for a number of years and the site has been owned by General Property Partnerships Limited since 1999.
A spokesman for Greenwoods said:
But YorkMix understands that the store’s last trading day will be Saturday, August 1.
The decision to close the York shop must have been taken quickly. The branch was only advertising for a branch manager in April.
Other closures
The news of Greenwoods’ departure from York comes after a number of other retailers left the city centre.
Two stores – the Early Learning Centre on Parliament Street and Laura Ashley on Davygate – closed in June, while a second on Davygate – womenswear brand Karen Millen – shut in May.
The owners of Greenwoods Menswear also shut their store in Selby in May after more than 50 years of trading.
In 2013, the chain, based in Bradford, reported a pre-tax loss of £3.9 million for the previous financial year. At the time, the owners of the shop said they were confident they could turn it around.
It was taken over by the Chinese fashion retailer Bosideng in 2013.
