York’s new £2 million athletics track opened to the public this week.
The facility, on York University’s Heslington West campus, includes an eight-lane synthetic running track and a grass infield for field activities such as pole vault and javelin.
Later this year, extra work will begin on a new sports pavilion and 500-capacity seating for spectators.

The track was funded by both the university and the City of York Council.
It is the home for the new City of York Athletics Club but is available for use by local schools and local groups.
Neil Hunter, chairman of the club, described the track as fantastic. He said:
We’ll be working very closely with schools to increase participation in athletics and to build on the talent and enthusiasm that is so prevalent throughout the city.
Cllr Nigel Ayre, who leads on culture, leisure and tourism, originally brought forward plans to fund and build the track at the university in July 2010.
“I am pleased that this vision has now been realised and athletes of all abilities can start to enjoy the new facilities,” he said.
