So far officers have breath-tested 250 drivers and arrested 30 people, including a dozen in York.
One man aged 58 was found to be just under four times over the legal limit, and another eight people were more than three times over the legal limit.
With the better weather arriving and lighter nights, police are urging people to plan ahead how they will get home at the end of a night out if they are intending to have a drink. The simple message: leave the car at home.
Alongside detecting drink driving, officers are also operating roadside drug screening tests. Already there have been two positive results for cannabis and seven arrests relating to driving while unfit through drugs.
Traffic Sergeant Andy Morton of the roads policing group said:
If you are convicted, be aware that you face disqualification from driving a hefty fine and the possibility of a prison sentence.
Every year we try and educate people about the devastation and heartbreak that drink and drug driving can cause.
How to help the police
By reporting someone “you could save someone’s life,” said Traffic Sergeant Green.
