York Mind is organising a number of community events to mark Mental Health Awareness Week 2015.

Throughout the week (Monday, May 11 to Sunday May 17 2015) the leading mental health charity will be making appearances across the York area to support better mental health provision and to offer information about its services.

Holly Pollard of York Mind, whose headquarters are at Highcliffe House in Clifton, said:

We know that mental ill-health will affect one in four of us at some point in our lives and that suicide is one of the biggest killers amongst men in the UK today.

Whilst we are able to help over 900 people per year in the York area, we know that many more will not be aware of the tailored, individual support we can provide.

Everyone’s experiences and needs are unique. Therefore it is vital that people know about York Mind and our varied range of services to consider us in addition to other organisations across the city, who may be able to help with other, related issues

What’s on this week

On Tuesday (May 12), there will be an information stall at the entrance of York Explore Central Library in Museum Street from 11am until 3pm.

On Wednesday (May 13) the information stall is moving to the Tuke Centre at the York Retreat in Heslington Road, where it will be open from 2pm until 7pm.

The Fleeting Arms in Gillygate, a temporary pop-up arts space, is hosting a Pamper afternoon from noon until 6pm on Thursday (May 14).

Finally the information stall will be in Easingwold on Friday (May 15) from 9am, with a raffle to raise funds for York Mind.

York Mind staff and volunteers will be available throughout the week at the information stands, to provide information and advice about the work of the charity.

Referral forms will also be available for those wishing to refer themselves for support.

Holly Pollard said York Mind would also be fundraising during the week. “On a personal level, being involved with a local charity means that I see the real difference the money makes, every day,” she said.

“It doesn’t simply contribute to a national pot – the funds raised are spent helping people you work with, are friends with, your next door neighbour or perhaps even you one day.”
