Russ Wilcox was unveiled on Wednesday (October 15) as the new boss of York City.

Previously manager of Scunthorpe United, he guided them to promotion to League One at the end of last season after a tremendous 28 game unbeaten run. As a result, he was voted League Two Manager of the Year 2013/2014.

Russ started in management as assistant manager at Scunthorpe United. He went on to hold assistant manager positions at Sheffield Wednesday, Burnley Football Club in both the Premier League and Championship and AFC Bournemouth, before returning to Scunthorpe in 2012.

“I am delighted to be the new manager of York City Football Club and I’m looking forward to the challenge ahead of me,” Russ said today.

“The club has great potential, with a new stadium on the horizon, and I feel I have the experience to help York City achieve success in League Two.

“I’m looking forward to meeting all the coaching staff and players on Thursday ahead of our home game against Shrewsbury on Saturday. I’m very excited and pleased to be embarking on this new journey.”

York City chairman Jason McGill welcomed the new manager to Bootham Crescent. “We believe he is the right person to take this club forward. He has excellent managerial experience and a track record of success in League Two.

“He is a hardworking individual and an excellent motivator and someone who shares our vision for the club now and in the future.”

The club also confirmed Steve Torpey will be Russ’s assistant manager, with the pair having worked together previously at Scunthorpe United.

Russ was sacked as Scunthorpe boss on October 8 after they made a poor start to life back in League One, with only seven points from their first 11 matches.

His appointment comes after Nigel Worthington resigned as City boss. The Minstermen languish 22nd in the 24-team League Two table, only off the relegation places on goal difference.
