Turpin marks your card
YorkMix tipster Turpin loves to seek out real value bets for his many followers. But today will be different. He expects a wave of favourites and second favourites to dominate proceedings.
So maybe today’s the day to take a chance on the Placepot or even the Jackpot.
2.00
Helmsley trainer David O’Meara is full of confidence for his likely favourite in the opener, and only Richard Fahey’s promising colt Spring Offensive looks set to pose a threat. The latter’s tidy win at Redcar suggests a good battle in store, with Upward Trend and Invincible Gold also coming into this highwayman’s reckoning.
2.30
Mark Johnston’s Jalingo is clear top-rated and a good run is expected. But Tim Easterby’s Ribblehead makes more appeal after impressive showings at Redcar and Doncaster. The betting market may offer the best clue. Expect Chapter And Verse (Kelly/Murphy) to have a big say too, with the Fahey yard’s Cosmic Halo worth a longshot consideration for a place.
3.00
The Garrowby stakes always promises high drama, and this year will be no different, even with a compact field of just eight runners. It’s hard to see much beyond the top three in the betting, likely to be Brian Meehan’s Intibaah, Marco Botti’s Naadirr, and Roger Varian’s Justineo.
Likely favourite Naadirr always seems to find one or two better than him each time, and has failed to capture last season’s form. So Turpin sides with Intibaah, who has already continued last season’s winning ways with a fine victory at Haydock in May.
Michael Dods’ Mass Rally could step up at decent odds… and Knavesmire course-and-distance winner Ladies Are Forever demands respect too.
3.35
Today’s the day we’ll learn just how good David Barron’s Beau Eile is. Her narrow (head) second on her debut at Beverley earned her several asterisks in Turpin’s notebook.
She is a tentative selection to upstage the likely favourite La Cuesta, whose respectable seventh in the Queen Mary will make her a shortish price here.
A market move for Excellent George should be noted. Preference for an upset at longish odds is for Richard Fahey’s Bamboccianti.
4.05
Hard to choose between Chivers and Gambol here. Tim Easterby’s Chivers just gets the vote on the strength of a solid win at Redcar last month. Chant makes some appeal for a place.
4.40
David Barron’s Fast Track looks tailor-made for his competitive sprint. The gelding followed up an eye-catching second at Haydock in July with a narrow win at Newmarket later the same month.
But that win was in a 19-runner field full of promising types, and Turpin expects the form to work out well indeed. David Barron’s second string, Money Team is also expected to make a bold showing.
Expect good runs from Caffeine, Jacob’s Pillow and Venura Mist.
5.10
Paul Cole is a shrewd judge and has clearly marked this one out for Ssafa for some while. A comfortable win at Kempton in mid-August, after a three-month break, suggests the six-year-old mare is running into top form, and the 400-mile round trip from Cole’s Wantage yard will be an investment worth making.
Zeus Magic has good credentials for this 1m 4f stamina test. Next Edition could make the frame at decent odds.
