A pile of rubbish and a mattress was deliberately set alight in the open in York yesterday evening (Friday).
A fire crew from Huntington responded to the flames in New Earswick at approximately 8:29 pm.
The open fire was beginning to spread to a nearby tree before firefighters tackled the blaze.
A North Yorkshire Fire & Rescue spokesperson said: “The fire measured approximately 4m x 4m and was believed to have been lit deliberately.”
Firefighters used knapsack sprayers, buckets of water and shovels to extinguish the fire. Police officers were also informed on the incident.
