Chocolate-lovers are being transported from Caribbean shores to the heart of medieval Yorkshire – as York’s Chocolate Story launch a brand new tour.
The story of rum is now being told at the popular York attraction, in the new Rum & Chocolate Tours – which launch at the venue from Thursday 19 June.
The new tour promises to bring together the two iconic flavours which share their origins in some of the warmest and most idyllic parts of the world.
It will run fortnightly, and is a collaboration between York’s Chocolate Story and Hooting Owl Distillery.
“It’s coming off the success of our Chocolate and Gin tour,” guest experience manager at York’s Chocolate Story, Serena Redshaw, told YorkMix. “We’re now paired with Hooting Owl to do a Chocolate and Rum tour, which is very exciting.”
The tour will feature tasting rums and pairing them with chocolate, and learning about the origins of chocolate, how rum is made and why it’s so popular in York.
Guests will be able to sample five rums during their tour:
- Mocha Rum
- Coconut Rum
- Tipsy Toad Dark Rum
- Hooting Owl Dark Rum
- A mystery rum – enjoy a surprise rum as the final pairing!
At the end of the tour, participants will be able to hand-pipe their own chocolates. “Which could be disastrous after people have had a few drinks! But it’s a very fun element of the tour.”
There is also a chocolatier’s demonstration of how they make rum chocolate. And, you can take your chocolate home with you too!

“With chocolate and rum having so much in common from their shared flavour profiles to their cultural roots – growing beside each other in equatorial regions and in the Caribbean – this pairing feels like a natural next step for our offerings.”
York’s Chocolate Story’s Rum & Chocolate Tours run every other Thursday evening, beginning on 19 June.
