A popular stationery shop in York city centre is set to close this weekend after nearly nine years of trading.
Smiggle, located on Coney Street, will shut its doors for the final time this Sunday (15 June), having first opened in August 2016.
The closure follows the landlord’s decision not to renew the store’s lease.
Number 11 Coney Street, which is home to the shop, was bought for £500,000 in 2021 by Trafalgar Leisure Ltd, a pubs business based in Harrow, Middlesex.
However, fans of the colourful Australian brand won’t have far to go for their stationery, as a new Smiggle is due to open at York Designer Outlet later this summer, with an expected launch in late July.
Smiggle, which first arrived in Britain in 2014, is known for its bright, playful designs and products aimed at a younger audience, including backpacks, games, notebooks, and water bottles.
The Coney Street store, situated between the York Mind charity shop and just a few doors up from City Screen, is currently holding a closing down sale with major discounts.
Many items have already been marked down, and shoppers can take an additional 50% off as the store clears its remaining stock.
It is currently unknown what will replace the city centre site.
Much of Coney Street is to be regenerated in the coming years, with work on the project set to begin this autumn.
