York Knights celebrated a famous victory with a trophy parade along the river today (Sunday).
The Knights beat Featherstone Rovers 5-4 at Wembley to clinch the 1895 Cup for the first time.
Liam Harris kicked a golden-point drop goal five minutes into the extra period after the two Championship clubs had served up a dogged and close-fought encounter yesterday.
Ben Reynolds had kicked Featherstone into a two-point lead with just 12 minutes gone but York hit back and two penalties from Harris gave the Knights a narrow half-time lead.
A similarly hard-fought second period saw Reynolds bag the only points when he kicked two more just past the hour mark to restore the deadlock.
As the minutes ticked down, Harris tried a drop goal that fell short and both sides had their chances in the early moments of the extra period.
Victory provided some measure of revenge for the Knights, who had lost their only previous appearance in the final, 41-34 to Featherstone in 2021.
Today, Knights’ delighted fans cheered the heroes as they brought the cup to the York riverside at King’s Staith.
Captain Liam Harris was drenched with bubbly on King’s Staith before the team went for a victory trip along the River Ouse courtesy of City Cruises.

Chairman Clint Goodchild posted a video on Facebook saying: “Just a quick message to all the fans.
“Yesterday was an incredible occasion, made all the more special by so many of you guys making the journey down to Wembley.
“For those of you that couldn’t be there in person, well today’s your day!”
