Police investigating vandalism at a North Yorkshire world heritage site have made an arrest.
As YorkMix reported on Tuesday, Fountains Abbey, near Ripon, was targeted on Sunday (16 February).
Police said graffiti was painted onto both the abbey and St Mary’s Church.
Yesterday, North Yorkshire Police issued a CCTV image of someone they would like to question in connection with the incident.
Today (Thursday), the force issued this update: “Officers investigating the criminal damage incident at Fountains Abbey that took place on Sunday 16 February have made an arrest.
“Last night (Wednesday) a man in his 40s was arrested on suspicion of criminal damage. He currently remains in police custody.
“Thank you to everyone who shared our CCTV appeal yesterday.”
The graffiti was painted onto the 11th century abbey and the Victorian St Mary’s Church.
The paint was oil-based meaning considerable damage has been done to the medieval stonework and the National Trust are working to rectify this.
