York Sport has launched its first sensory friendly swim sessions.
The new classes are designed to create an inclusive swimming environment for those with sensory needs and anyone looking for a peaceful aquatic environment.
The new sessions aim to ensure that everyone can enjoy the benefits of swimming in a calm and supportive setting.
York Sport’s sensory friendly swim sessions are tailored to meet the needs of participants who thrive in quieter, less stimulating environments, through thoughtful adjustments and interactive elements.
Background music is removed to create a quieter space, and noise levels are minimised. No other classes will take place during the sensory friendly swim times to help maintain a peaceful atmosphere.
The sessions also offer engaging opportunities for participants to explore sensory friendly equipment, such as textured and flashing balls and floating mirrors.
Laminated flashcards are available to encourage simple interactive swim activities, helping parents and children build water confidence and develop new skills together in a supportive setting.
To ensure inclusivity and safety, session capacity is limited to 20 participants.
The sensory friendly swim sessions are open to everyone – with a particular focus on individuals with autism or sensory processing disorders and those who prefer a quieter swimming environment.
“At York Sport, we’re committed to providing opportunities for everyone to enjoy the physical and mental benefits of swimming,” said Richard Orr, business manager at York Sport.
“Our new Sensory Friendly Swim sessions represent an important step toward making our facilities more accessible and welcoming to individuals with diverse needs.”
The new swim sessions will take place from 8am to 9.15am every Sunday.
Sensory Friendly Swim sessions are offered at the same price as York Sport’s usual Pay-As-You-Go swim rates.
