It was announced last year that Ripley Castle had gone up for sale for the first time in its 700-year history.

But at the time, no price was disclosed.

Now though the asking price has been revealed for the historic estate near Harrogate – offers over £21 million.

That makes it North Yorkshire’s most expensive property. And Carter Jonas, which is marketing the castle, has also published a video to show you exactly what you get for the money.

To be fair, it’s only £21m if you want the whole thing – the castle, the estate and the grounds.

But it can also be broken up and sold in lots, with The Boars Head Hotel, Ripley Village Store, the estate woodland and the village cricket ground among the places that could be sold separately.

The sale has been sparked by Ingilby family moving out. They acquired the estate in the 1300s then built the castle and lived there ever since.

In an interview with the Sunday Times today, Sir Thomas and Lady Ingilby say they have already downsized to a five-bedroom Georgian house close to the castle gatehouse.

Lady Ingilby told the paper: “I’m 65 and Thomas is 70 this year — he’s had [the castle] since he was 18.

“We’ve been very committed, we’ve worked very hard. We want to enjoy our retirement. We want to be more spontaneous. You can’t be spontaneous when you’re tied two years in advance.”

Sir Thomas, the 28th generation of Ingilby to live at Ripley Castle, inherited it after his father died suddenly in 1974 when Thomas was 18. “Bricks and mortar are less important than family,” he said.

“We would never insist our children took on something they didn’t want to take, because therein lies great unhappiness.”
