A footballer has appeared in court charged with the murder of another player at York Station.
Mckenzie Dicicco, 22, from Middlesbrough, appeared at York Magistrates’ Court today charged with murdering James Hitchcock, who was goalkeeper for Barton Town FC in the Northern Counties East League.
Mr Dicicco, who has played football for teams in both Yorkshire and the North East, spoke to confirm his name and address.
He didn’t enter pleas to the charge. He also gave no indication as to plea in respect of a separate allegation of affray.
British Transport Police were called to the station at 8.48pm on Sunday following reports of an alleged serious assault.
Paramedics and North Yorkshire Police also attended and Mr Hitchcock, who was in his 30s, was taken to hospital in a life-threatening condition.
Mr Hitchcock died yesterday (Wednesday) with his family by his bedside.
Mr Dicicco, 22, of Belgravia Gardens, Middlesbrough, was charged with murder and affray.
Magistrates sent the case to Leeds Crown Court where Mr Dicicco will appear tomorrow. He was remanded in custody until then.
